CHARACTERS Jesus, Crowds, and the Disciples.
SETTING When Jesus sees the crowds, he goes up on a mountain, and then sits down with his disciples and begins teaching them. You could say this is King Jesus’ inaugural address about the Kingdom of God.
TENSION The Kingdom Jesus teaches here isn’t like other Kingdoms that the people know. It’s familiar but at the same time it’s not. Values that bring blessedness aren’t necessarily the same as values that bring happiness and Jesus is about to unwrap this distinction for the people. How does what Jesus is teaching now compare to what they’ve been taught and already know? Is it the same? Is it different? Does it rub against the grain? Is it hard to digest? If it is hard to digest then why?
RESOLUTION Jesus offers something more than happiness. He teaches of a Kingdom that we can be a part of, a kingdom that gives us strength to endure what the kingdoms of this world throw against us.
