Isaiah finds himself in the presence of a Holy God who not only fills the temple, but also fills the world. Isaiah is filled with fear because he knows he's in the presence of God who shakes the foundations of the earth with his holiness and at this point Isaiah believes he's about to die before God.
Take down the mountains. Lift up the plains. Smooth out the rough spots. Make it easy for God's arrival because God is bringing good news, his Kingdom. His rule and reign will set everything straight. It will make all things new again. God will restore that which has been lost. His gentleness will restore their souls.
So what does it look like to walk in the light of the Lord? According to Isaiah, a lot like beating swords into plowshares, a lot like taking death and turning it into life.
God has made a promise. You don’t have to live in exile. You can live in the covenant of love that never ends. God is inviting us to more.
But Isaiah prophesies. A child will be born. A Wonderful Counselor, a Mighty King, an Everlasting Father. The Prince of Peace himself. When he comes, darkness will flee. Clothing and weapons used for war will be repurposed to bring life instead.
